Life suddenly turned upside down for Saranne Rothberg when she was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer in 1999 . Doctors predicted that she might have less than a five-year life expectancy . To her credit , she chose not to give up and decided to fight the cancer with her sense of humor .
During her first cancer treatment , Sarrane arranged a " chemo comedy party " at the clinic for her family and friends . They watched videos of stand-up comics - comedians who entertain without props . As laughter spread throughout the chemo clinic , the anxiety diminished and everyone . Especially Saranne , felt more hopeful . Saranne's body , mind , and spirit soon responded positively to the therapeutic benefits of humor . As a result , she recovered and until today she has remained cancer-free .
Saranne Rothberg today is a woman with a simple-goal to make other people laugh . She established The Comedy Cures Foundation in 1999 . It is a non-profit organization bringing joy , laughter and therapeutic humor programs to kids and grown-ups living with illness , depression , trauma and disabilities . The foundation's programs include Laugh-Out-Loud ( support groups ) , Laugh-A-Thon ( comedy performances ) , and Laugh About ( room-to-room hospital visits ).
